AI Scribes in Therapy? Let’s Discuss.

Alrighty, so you might be hearing from your therapist soon (or already have) about a tool we're using called TherapyFuel. TherapyFuel is a secure, AI-powered scribe that helps us write therapy notes faster and better. Let’s discuss, Hub-style.

What is TherapyFuel?

TherapyFuel is a HIPAA-compliant, AI-based scribe that's built directly into the electronic health record system that we already use (TherapyNotes). It was designed specifically for mental health providers (no tech bros over here) and, ultimately, helps us document sessions more efficiently and effectively.

What It Does (and Doesn’t Do)

Let’s talk real quick about what TherapyFuel actually does versus what it doesn’t do.


What it does:

  • Creates a time-limited transcript of your session (only if you agree).

  • Generates a draft of the clinical note based on that transcript.

  • Lets your therapist review, edit, and finalize the draft of that note–nothing is auto-saved or auto-shared without therapist review. 


What it doesn’t do:

  • It does not “learn” from your sessions. This was created so that the AI doesn’t keep anything you say to build future models and doesn’t aggregate the data from your transcript or others.

  • It does not store transcripts forever. Transcripts from sessions are deleted as soon as a note is completed from the session or if it’s been longer than 30 days. 

    • For context, we require completion of documentation within 72 hours of a session, so transcripts should not ‘live’ for longer than three days.

  • It does not replace your therapist’s judgment, skills, or documentation. It merely serves as a tool for your clinician.

Why We’re Using It

The real reason? We’re using it so that we can focus more on you. We want to be able to focus exclusively on the person or people in front of us, and not our jottings in the notepad to our side.

Using a secure scribe like TherapyFuel helps our clinicians:

  • Stay more present during your sessions (less “hold on, let me write that down”)

  • Spend less time after hours remembering what happened

  • Write clearer, more accurate documentation

  • Get home to their dog/kid/book/quiet time a little earlier (which helps them be a better therapist, too)

Do You Have to Use It?

Nope. Not at all. [<- Read that again - this is not required, by any means.]

If your therapist offers this option to you, it’s totally voluntary. You can say yes, no, or “lemme think about it” and we’ll roll with that. No pressure, no hard feelings, and no requirements.
